Pumpkin seed sign

September 19, 2013 by twinoaksstudio

Hello everyone,

Its a beautiful, crisp day here in Maryland.   I hope everyone else is enjoying similar weather!

I just finished work on a batch of signs.   I love vintage seed catalogs and the inspiration for my fall themed piece is in honor of the fall garden.

The sign is hand painted using a wash of Miss Mustardseed’s Typewriter (black) milk paint.  I didn’t apply it too thickly as I like to have the grain and knots in the wood show through.   The wording and pumpkin are hand painted using acrylic paints.  The only shade of orange paint I have is a really bright one, so I did a lot of paint mixing to get the colors right.  It turned out really cute!

The inspiration for this piece is a combination of 2 vintage images.   The adorable pumpkin (or “punkin”!)  is from The Graphics Fairy’s website.   (I am always using her images!  Thank you again Karen!!)    Its an old seed packet and I recreated the pumpkin from the packet.

The second image is the cover from a 1897 seed catalog.   I love the vintage typography on this cover, and I copied a couple of the words using a projector and chalk.  I was looking for something simple but with styled lettering, and this fit nicely.

I’ll be bringing this sign to consign at Stifel and Capra in Falls Church, VA.   If you are local to the Washington DC area, Stifel and Capra is a wonderful store to browse for art, gifts and antiques.

Update:   I actually made up a 2nd sign just like this one and put it for sale in my etsy shop!   I will be a vendor at Lucketts Winter mini-Market November 8-10th and I may bring it with me, if I still have it then!  🙂

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. I love this! It is inspiring me as I am working on doing Fall decor for my house/yard. Yes, I am last minute. Welcome to my world. 😀
What did you do to the wood? Did you toss a coat of walnut toned stain on it before you painted the image and font? Inquiring minds (me!) want to know!
    Thanks in advance…

    • Hello! Thank you for the comment and compliment! The board I started with is reclaimed interior knotty pine paneling – very similar to the stuff that was on the walls of my grandmothers post WWII cape cod. I paint on the back side of the paneling – so the side that was facing the wall as its generally a flatter surface. I apply a wash of Miss Mustardseed’s milk paint in Typewriter (black). It acts like a stain if you mix it with twice the water that it calls for, but dries quicker than typical oil based stain and has no VOCs. After its dry I sand it a little to highlight the graining on the wood, paint the piece with the acrylics, sand some more and top it off with furniture wax. Hope this helps and happy painting! 🙂 — Pauline
